Lead-free gunmetal guarantees hygienically safe drinking water installations – today and in the future.

Safeguard the future of your drinking water installations with lead-free gunmetal fittings from REHAU

The new Drinking Water Ordinance 2023 tightens the limit values for heavy metals, especially lead, which significantly increases the requirements for materials and processing methods. With lead-free red brass RG+ from REHAU, drinking water installations for buildings are and remain safe and hygienic.

Lead in drinking water alloys

The quality of drinking water is strongly influenced by the drinking water installation, and the chosen pipework. For this reason, legislators have tightened the regulations for drinking water in recent years and extended the quality parameters with regard to health and hygiene aspects right down to the last tapping point.
The most common heavy metal discussed in drinking water is lead. In the past, lead pipes and connectors were installed in buildings. They are still there in some old buildings, so if there is a suspicion of lead pipes, an experienced installer should be called to check the site.

In addition to its historical use in pipelines, lead was often added to copper alloys for the manufacture of components. It ensures good chip breaking during the machining of fittings and faucets and allows for particularly pressure-tight components in the sand-casting process.
However, even very small amounts of lead in drinking water can be harmful to health. Unborn babies, infants and small children are particularly at risk, as their nervous system, brain and haematopoiesis can be affected. This is why legislators have continuously tightened the limit values for lead concentrations in drinking water in recent decades.

On the safe side with lead-free gunmetal

Lead-free materials should always be used for installations in new buildings and when renovating existing systems to ensure sustainability. This serves as a preventive measure against stricter thresholds for lead emissions expected in the future. It also ensures that lead does not re-enter the material cycle and the recycling process. This requirement has already become standard in many common consumer goods, such as in the electrical and automotive industries – just think of unleaded petrol.
Until now, however, there has been no lead-free version of the classic gunmetal material with all its positive properties. This gap is now being closed by the new material RG+ (CuSn4Zn2PS). After years of intensive development, this lead-free material achieves the corrosion properties of the copper-tin-zinc alloy. The new alloy is not only suitable for installations in Germany but has also been optimised for European drinking water.

RAUTITAN RX+ for a healthy drinking water installation for buildings

Since 2019, the material RG+ has been used in all fittings of the RAUTITAN RX+ system and, in combination with the other components of the REHAU RAUTITAN system, offers an optimal solution for technical and hygienic requirements for safe and reliable drinking water installation.

Demystifying drinking water approvals

Across the UK, any products used inside buildings and connected to the water supply must comply with The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations. In the past the most common method of demonstrating compliance was to obtain WRAS approval, but today equivalent independent certification is also offered by KIWA and NSF.

Often, we find our customers seeking reassurance of product compliance and requesting WRAS certification. While WRAS Approval remains widely recognised, equivalent certifications from KIWA and NSF can offer the same and sometimes higher levels of assurance.

KIWA and NSF, like WRAS, offer validation for regulation compliance for manufacturers and distributors of plumbing products in line with the regulation requirements. The product testing and certification guarantees that a product is safe, for the consumer, to be used in contact with drinking water.

The different certification levels

There are different certification levels available to manufactures.  Level 3 is most similar to past WRAS approvals with initial testing and only a full re-test every 5 years. Here at REHAU, we have decided to go further than with WRAS and opted for Level +1 with KIWA, which involves everything Level 3 does plus an initial factory audit, followed by annual factory audits.

What is tested?

There are multiple key testing areas, all accessing the safety, performance and durability to not only comply with The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations, but also the product performance, reliability and safety.

The key testing areas are on the impact on water quality (BS 6920) and on Mechanical and Functional Testing to relevant BS standards and long-standing test code sheets from the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI/DEFRA).

How do I know if a product is KIWA certified?

It is important to ensure any product being installed has the correct approval. The most reliable way to check if a product is certified, is to check the KUKreg4 Approved Products List  database online, which lists all water regulation approved products.
