Polymer or concrete?

Plastic chambers are the clear winner in the material comparison with concrete chambers.

Polymer chambers. Strongly on the rise

Around 78% of the public sewer network in Germany will need to be renovated in the medium to long term. This raises the question: polymer or concrete? In the past, the choice was mainly in favour of concrete or masonry drainage chambers. Comparing the material properties of concrete chambers with those of polymer chambers, it quickly becomes clear that this was not necessarily the best choice. Polymer solutions are up to 37% less expensive in the long term and are significantly safer, tighter, more resilient and require less maintenance in everyday use. And they also score high marks in terms of sustainability over their entire life cycle of around 100 years.

AWASCHACHT from REHAU

#expect more – not all PP is the same

High-quality, unfilled sewer pipe systems in accordance with EN 1852 were developed for heavy-duty use in municipal drainage and differ considerably from simple filled pipe systems used in groundwater drainage – and not just in terms of price. A distinction is made between pipes made of filler-free PP in accordance with DIN EN 1852 (100% PP) and pipes made of PP with mineral additives in accordance with DIN EN 14758 (up to 50% fillers).
In PP sewer pipe systems in accordance with DIN EN 14758, additives are added to the PP base material, usually inexpensive mineral fillers. The addition of these additives significantly changes the physical and mechanical properties of the pipe. In contrast, the AWADUKT PP sewer pipe system and AWASCHACHT, in accordance with DIN EN 1852 and made of filler-free PP, offer the full performance of the material: excellent impact resistance, maximum point load resistance and a service life of at least 100 years certified by the LGA Nuremberg.

Mechanical, thermal and chemical advantages

While concrete and stone seem to be unbeatably resistant and hard building materials, this is also their disadvantage: even slight vibrations, e.g. from road traffic, can cause permanent damage. In contrast, an AWASCHACHT made of pure polypropylene absorbs shocks without any problems thanks to its dynamic load-bearing capacity. This is made possible by the high material quality, which also ensures that no cracks or flaking occur.

Corrosion-resistant

According to a study carried out by the IKT (Institute for Underground Infrastructure), nearly one in two concrete chambers is not even watertight at the time of installation. AWASCHACHT has a special Safety-Lock sealing system in the connection area to ensure that the polymer chambers are 100% impermeable to external water immediately after installation. This prevents accidental displacement of the seal during the insertion process. The position of the seals also ensures maximum safety: they sit protected in a ring and seal horizontally and radially.

AWASCHACHT from REHAU

Withstands up to 10 tonnes wheel load

AWASCHACHT can carry wheel loads of up to 10 tonnes, which is twice the weight of a truck. Crumbling mortar joints and sinking lids are prevented by supporting the pipe in a bearing ring embedded in the road. If the road settles, the bearing ring will settle with it.

100% infiltration water-proof

According to a study carried out by the IKT (Institute for Underground Infrastructure), nearly one in two concrete chambers is not even watertight at the time of installation. AWASCHACHT has a special Safety-Lock sealing system in the connection area to ensure that the polymer chambers are 100% impermeable to external water immediately after installation. This prevents accidental displacement of the seal during the insertion process. The position of the seals also ensures maximum safety: they sit protected in a ring and seal horizontally and radially.

Easy to install

An AWASCHACHT is up to 95% lighter than a concrete chamber! As real lightweights, PP chambers save installation time. Instead of 4 concrete chambers, you can install 5 AWASCHACHT DN 1000 per day. The low weight and the buoyancy-proof interlocking of the chamber with the ground thanks to horizontal reinforcing ribs also prevent the chamber floor from settling or tipping. AWASCHACHT DN 800 weighs 32 kg and can be transported and placed in the trench without any heavy equipment.

Long service life

The operating phase of AWASCHACHT is classified as at least 100 years, which is twice as long as the 48.8 years for concrete chambers.

Cheaper in the long run

AWASCHACHT saves on maintenance and renovation costs. Over their life cycle, PP chambers are less expensive than concrete. This is the result of a dynamic cost comparison calculation according to DWA in the technical article in the journal "Straßen Tiefbau" of June 2013.
Planning with needs-based nominal diameters also saves on material costs as well as on the costs of reduced earthworks and installation.
